Health & Family Life Education (H.F.L.E.)
As I explored the HFLE curriculum I realized how fundamentally important it is in providing a holistic education to our students. It provides the opportunity to bring authentic experiences into the classroom. It also ensures that all learning styles are catered for thereby promoting an inclusive classroom. It allows for a more culturally relevant context to be crafted and it provides the necessary life skills essential for survival in the real world.
The HFLE life skills are also consistent with the 21st Century learning skills. These skills include communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, critical thinking, creativity, self-awareness, stress management and the ability to handle one's emotions in a healthy manner.

Importance of interpersonal skills, being able to work as part of a team, the development of critical thinking and problem solving skillsThe importance of being able to work as part of a group, demonstrating interpersonal skills. The lesson objectives also included the development of critical thinking skills and problem solving skills to cope with real life problems .
- A form three class doing problem solving as part of the Unit on Problem Solving was chosen. These particular skills were chosen because in the past there was a culture of competitiveness among the students and this contributed to cliques forming. Working as part of a team prepares the students not only for the workplace but helps them not to be selfish. The critical thinking and problem solving skills would help them to deal with the challenges of their teenage life in a healthy way. Students need to be trained to deal with managing stress and other issues so that they do not resort to cutting, depression and becoming involved in inappropriate relationships. ![]()

Importance of decision-making in choosing healthy foods for a balanced diet to promote healthy lifestyles. The importance of decision-making in choosing healthy foods for a balanced diet to promote healthy lifestyles.
-A form two class doing a lesson on Charts from the Unit Spreadsheets was used. As young girls self image is very important. Students however sometimes are mostly concerned with aesthetics and therefore feel safe to eat any type of food once they are not becoming obese. However students getting the virus often and their inability to concentrate in classes sometimes may be as a result of poor diets. Today juvenile diabetes is increasing rapidly because of the large volumes of processed foods that students consume. As I prepared the lesson for the class I reflected on my own eating habits and realized how guilty I too was of resorting to fast foods and other easy options that were not always the best choices. I resolved that I must make changes to my diet as well. ![]()
