MEDIA COMPETENCY
As an IT teacher who has been using PowerPoint for a number of years I was astonished to see the significant changes in the way that I use PowerPoint.
My first teaching practice was evident of the former manner in which I would use PowerPoint- as a means of disseminating information using a lecture style instructional strategy.
In preparation for my second teaching practice on a field day I prepared a PowerPoint, again as a means of just sharing information. The lesson however required the students to complete a table comparing physical and logical methods of security. My initial idea was to have the students use a sheet of Bristol board which I was certain I had in stock at home but since I only decided to source it the night before and to my dismay there was none I was in dire need of a contingency plan. As I sat staring at the PowerPoint slides it occurred to me that I could project the image and have the students complete the table on the whiteboard. Thus I discovered the use of PowerPoint as an interactive tool.
Later on while on another field day I saw the amazing use of PowerPoint to create an interactive quiz and when investigated I realized that it was possible through the use of hyperlinks. Thus I used PowerPoint again in my final teaching practice to create an interactive game as a class activity.
As I continue to explore the application I look forward to becoming more competent in the use of this amazing tool that I so previously under-utilized.

Another area in which I developed media competency was in the creation of photostory. This was significant because often I would spend considerable time trying to locate videos for a topic but would not find exactly what I wanted. This tool now gives me the advantage of being able to produce videos of exactly what I want.
