Classroom Practice
As a result of th DipEd programme I have started to journal my experiences in and out of the classroom both as a teacher and as a student. This has helped me significantly to think about what I do and why I do it, whether it works or it does not and if so what would I do differently. This process of self observation and self evaluation has helped to analyse my underlying beliefs and hence I am able to make changes and improvements to become a better educator.

Field day at HFC PenalThe following shows the unit plan, lesson plan, students' samples, supervisor's comments and teacher's reflection for the first school visit. Although significant strides have been made with respect to crafting unit plans it can be seen that greater efforts have to be made in terms of defining lesson's objectives. The temptation to proceed as has been the norm in the past in the utilization of a teacher-centered instructional strategy has been still not been overcome and the ineffectiveness of such a strategy has been emphasized. ![]()

First School VisitThis lesson was instrumental in portraying the extent to which I would "show and tell" my students what to do as opposed to allow them to do it for themselves and just guide them. It was such a wake up call for me to see the how engaged the students were while they were creating the report for themselves as opposed to when I was demonstrating it. I realize now that many of my students would have been capable of doing the task on their own but was just being polite and listening to me. Ironic that I am so concerned about not wasting limited class time but spend the majority of the time explaining to students a task that they already knew. As painful as the experience was I was glad to have had the reality of what I was doing be shown to me so that I could make the necessary changes to become more effective in the classroom.

Field Day at Siparia Secondary
The following lesson plans and samples are from my first teaching experience at the field day at Siparia Secondary School. There was an improvement in that a predominantly teacher-centered was not utilized. The interactive use of the PowerPoint presentation was very effective. It showed small steps towards moving away from the traditional position of "sage on a stage"

Field Day at Princes Town Secondary
This was my third teaching experience on a field day but my first at a school with only boys in the class. This lesson was carefully crafted to be fully student centered and was significant in showing my growth as an educator. The traditional position was only adopted for the introduction of the lesson and for the rest of the duration it can be seen that I was moving around and more interactive with the students. Interestingly its being at their sides that allows me to be of greater assistance to them rather than being at the front.

School visit for Curriculum StudyThe use of problem-based learning as an instructional strategy has been beneficial in promoting the development of higher order thinking skills I believe in me as a teacher in having to craft appropriate case studies that depict real world authentic problems. The strategy has also been helpful in sharpening my students problem-solving skills and their interpersonal skills as well. The increased level of motivation among the students can also be attributed to the change in strategy.

Final Teaching PracticeAs the days got closer the anxiety grew greater. Finally the morning of my final teaching practice had arrived. As I entered the form three class to remind them to come to the collaborative classroom one of the students volunteered to pray so that I would not be nervous. It made me realise how important it is to foster a healthy learning environment where everyone feels comfortable.
I was satisfied that at this stage I was able to craft a lesson that was totally student-centered. However the challenged to ask questions that would promote higher order thinking in my students needs to be developed more. I look forward to continuing on this journey of learning. |
